For comparison, the amount of shells shot in 51 months of war is estimated in about 1 billion. However, the military mail <strong>didn&#8217;t only deliver letters<\/strong> and postcards: supplies were very scarce on the frontline, and soldiers had to ask their families for<strong> help<\/strong>. Therefore, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-25934407\">millions of parcels<\/a> <\/strong>were sent every week, each one containing food and\/or warm clothes, underwear, cigarettes, etc.<\/p>\n<p>The episode of this week is entirely dedicated to <strong>military mail<\/strong> and <strong>relief<\/strong> <strong>packages<\/strong>. When he <strong>died in June 1916<\/strong> he wasn&#8217;t yet 21.<\/p>\n<p>The second letter was written in summer 1915 by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeana1914-1918.eu\/en\/contributions\/5521\">Guido Sampaolo<\/a><\/strong>, an Italian soldier who managed to survive the war and later raised a prosperous family.<\/p>\n<p>The last letter was written on the Western front by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.europeana.eu\/portal\/record\/2020601\/attachments_1104_415_1104_original_1104_doc.html\">Fritz Niebergall<\/a><\/strong>, a German soldier who<strong> died in France<\/strong> in 1918, aged 24.
